Hercules and Love Affair is the debut album by American house group Hercules and Love Affair. The album, which was released by DFA Records in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2008 and a day later in North America, was produced by Andy Butler and Tim Goldsworthy. The album was recorded at the Plantain Studios in Manhattan. Andrew Raposo (of fellow DFA band Automato) and Tyler Pope (of !!!) contributed bass to the album.

Hercules and Love Affair is a musical project from New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons). It is signed to DFA Records. Their single "Blind" was released on 3 March, 2008, and their debut album (produced by Butler and Tim Goldsworthy) was released on 10 March. The album has been critically well-received and charted in the top 40 in several countries.

Flight of the Conchords follow the release of their six-track ~~Grammy Award-nominated~~ Grammy Award-winning (it’s true!) CDEP The Distant Future with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled Flight of the Conchords (which, not at all coincidentally, is also the name of their HBO television series). Produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck Midnight Vultures, Ladytron Light & Magic) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington, the album features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of Flight of the Conchords concert and television favorites. And its release finally renders pointless all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers (the modern day equivalent of holding a microphone up to the television speaker and shouting at your mom to be quiet), which have bloated hard drives the world over. The songs are heard here in expanded but reverent arrangements. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique.

And, the album sounds legitimate and musically, it’s incredible, but, as Shakespeare said, “Does it funny?” Happily, yes. If amazing, delightful and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment! These 15 songs pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments. To be blunt, if you can’t find a rire ou sourire in the FSL study guide of opening track, “Foux du Fafa,” then, please notice, vous êtes malade.

Apocalypso is the second full length album by Australian electronic duo The Presets. The album was released by Modular Recordings on the 12 April 2008 in Australia and features the singles "My People" and "This Boy's In Love". "My People" featured in the 2007 Triple J Hottest 100, where it placed at number 18.

After two years of non-stop touring, The Presets began production of Apocalypso in early 2007 by going to a farm in Byron Bay for two weeks. The duo had no songs written or any idea what the album would sound like before hitting the farm. Basing themselves in Berlin, the band continued work on the album while touring in Europe. The majority of the album was recorded by the band themselves at their own individual home studios. The songs were finished at a friend's studio and the album was mixed at BJB Studios in Sydney and at Seedy Underbelly in Los Angeles. The album was mastered at The Exchange in London.

Since I Left You is the debut album by Melbourne-based electronic music group The Avalanches, first released on November 27, 2000. It is composed almost entirely of samples from old records, films, and TV shows, similar to that of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing.... It was a worldwide success, especially in the UK where it reached #8 on the commercial album charts.

Initial overseas versions of the album had some samples removed. Current pressings have most of these samples back in place. The Avalanches also became the first act to get permission from Madonna to sample her work.

The album reached #8 in the UK, and was Planet Sound's #1 Album of 2001. It was also 'Album of the Year 2001' of the now defunct magazine The Face. Since I Left You is noted in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

"Frontier Psychiatrist" was released as a single and became their most well-known song, hitting #48 in Australia and #18 in the UK. The song "Since I Left You" hit #16 in the UK and also entered the top 100 in Australia.

Arvo Pärt is an Estonian composer of classical music. Often identified with the school of minimalism and more specifically, that of "mystic minimalism" or "sacred minimalism". He is considered a pioneer of this style, along with contemporaries Henryk Górecki and John Tavener. Tabula Rasa was used in the opening scenes of the award-winning 2001 documentary War Photographer, about photojournalist James Nachtwey. Fratres for Violin and Piano was used in the soundtrack for the 2007 film There Will Be Blood. Elements from the Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten was used in Léos Carax's film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991); and a part of the composition was heard in Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11 while the audience confronts the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City.

"The Man Don't Give a Fuck" is a song by the Super Furry Animals, twice released as a single by the group.

It is based round a sample from the Steely Dan song "Show Biz Kids" - "You know they don't give a fuck about anybody else". The sample is repeated more than 50 times and so the single is claimed to feature the word "fuck" more than any other song, but Insane Clown Posse's "Fuck the World" in fact beats it with 93 instances of 'fuck'. However, the live re-issue of "The Man Don't Give A Fuck" broke that record.

A live, 23 minute version was released in 2004 as a single with the word 'fuck' mentioned approximately 100 times. It was recorded in London's Hammersmith Apollo. It was printed in a limited edition with an identification number on the back cover.

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is the fourteenth studio album by international alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The album was recorded in June and July of 2007 at The State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, London and mixed by Nick Launay at British Grove in Chiswick, and was released on March 3, 2008. On February 18 the title track "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" was released as the first single - on CD, limited edition 7", and as a digital download, with "Accidents Will Happen" as the B-side.

It is the second Bad Seeds studio album without Blixa Bargeld and the first to be released since the Bad Seeds side project Grinderman released their eponymous album. In several interviews Cave has stated that this album will "sound like Grinderman", implying a garage rock sound^[1]. The album will be accompanied by a "gigantic" tour which will not include the United States.

On the band's official website Cave wrote on his inspiration for the album:

“	Ever since I can remember hearing the Lazarus story, when I was a kid, you know, back in church, I was disturbed and worried by it. Traumatized, actually. We are all, of course, in awe of the greatest of Christ's miracles - raising a man from the dead - but I couldn't help but wonder how Lazarus felt about it. As a child it gave me the creeps, to be honest. I've taken Lazarus and stuck him in New York City, in order to give the song, a hip, contemporary feel. I was also thinking about Harry Houdini who spent a lot of his life trying to debunk the spiritualists who were cashing in on the bereaved. He believed there was nothing going on beyond the grave. He was the second greatest escapologist, Harry was, Lazarus, of course, being the greatest. I wanted to create a kind of vehicle, a medium, for Houdini to speak to us if he so desires, you know, from beyond the grave.	„

Dig, Lazarus Dig!!! features artwork by British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster.

A series of viral video trailers for the album are being produced by artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard and posted on YouTube.

Early critical response has been overwhelmingly positive, with reviewers citing this as both a return to greatness and a new side of the band.

Mercedes Sosa (1935) is one of the greatest Argentinean folk singer!
She jumped to public attention when she was fifteen years old winning a singer's radio contest in Tucuman, her natal Province. From that point on she continues growing up as a notorious figure in the folk singers medium.
Due to difficult political situation at Argentina in 1979 she was forced into exile by military Junta, revisited Argentina briefly in 1982, giving a live recital and returned definitely in 1984 with the arrival of democracy.

The songs of this CD reflect Mercedes' musical life, not only Argentinean music but a wide and rich Latin American repertoire.
"La Maza" from Cuban Silvio Rodriguez's repertoire interrogates the audience, in poetical language, about what will be songs & music without substance. It is sung with deep compromise by Mercedes.
"Maria, Maria" authored by Brazilians Milton Nascimento & Fernando Brant, with unmistakable afro rhythm is interpreted brilliantly by Sosa.
Chilean composer Violeta Parra contributes with a top notch composition: "Gracias a la Vida" with Mercedes giving way to all her sentiment.
"La Arenosa" whose text is authored by Manuel J. Castilla and music composed by Cuchi Leguizamon, two well known folklorists and traditional motive "Luna Tucumana" are compositions more in line with Mercedes' usual compilations.
"Alfonsina y el Mar" whose text is authored by Felix Luna and music composed by Ariel Ramirez, tells the tragic end of poet Alfonsina Storni. Mercedes give a pungent interpretation.

This is a terrific album, where Mercedes Sosa, possibly Argentina's finest female vocalist, interprets songs about Argentinian women throughout the country's history (hence the title of the record). While the songs are not exactly folk music, they were written by some of Argentina's finest folk musicians. "Alfonsina Y El Mar" alone is worth the price of the CD.

Some of the women are vaguely famous (such as Juana Azurduy, a rebel leader against the Spanish) or Alfonsina Storni (a poet), some are simple women who simbolize a time or a social type, such as the white woman who refuses to leave the defeated Indians and return to a civilization no longer hers (Dorotea La Cautiva). Or the anonymous European settler women, faced with decades of backbreaking work in the middle of nowhere (Gringa Chaqueña).

This is a fairly quiet but beautifully put together record, and the songs tend to have an introspective tone. Mercedes Sosa is backed mainly by Spanish guitars and harpsichord, with some Southern American percussion such as the bombo.

Deer Tick is the stage name of singer-songwriter John McCauley. On September 4, 2007 he released his first studio album, War Elephant to mixed reviews. At 21 years of age, Deer Tick has acquired a strong following by constantly touring parts of the Northeast, and self releasing cd-r's.

Lucky is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band Nada Surf. Its was released February 4, 2008 in Europe; February 5, 2008 in the USA, Canada and Australia; and is expected to be released February 18, 2008 in the UK and Japan.

The band issued an official statement announcing this album on October 12, 2007. The song "See These Bones" premiered on the Anti-Hit List Podcast on October 20, 2007.^[1] Due to a misquotation of Matthew Caws, the album was first expected to be called Time for Plan A.

The original pressing includes a 4-song bonus.

Lucky has since leaked onto torrent and peer sharing sites, before its official release date.

Liverpool 8 is the fourteenth studio album by Ringo Starr. It was released worldwide on January 14, 2008 (January 15, 2008 in the United States) and marks Starr's return to EMI for the first time since leaving the label in 1975, following the end of The Beatles' recording contract with the company.^[1] Although technically Starr did make a brief re-appearance on EMI in the mid-1990s, as when his 1981 album Stop and Smell the Roses and his 1983 album Old Wave (both originally released on Boardwalk Records) were issued on CD, they appeared on Capitol's The Right Stuff label. Liverpool 8 was released by EMI Music worldwide, Capitol Records in the United States, and Parlophone in the United Kingdom.

The album was originally slated for a June 2007 release, and began as another production by the collaborative team of Mark Hudson and Starr (the two had previously co-produced Vertical Man, I Wanna Be Santa Claus, VH1 Storytellers, Ringo Rama, and Choose Love). However, the release date was pushed back to the beginning of 2008 when Hudson was replaced by Dave Stewart after a falling out with Starr. The album's production credits read, "Produced by Ringo Starr and Mark Hudson; Re-Produced by Ringo Starr and David Stewart." All of the songs but one were written with the Roundheads, although Stewart also has several co-writing credits. Starr's attorney Bruce Grakal told journalist Peter Palmiere that the partnership between Hudson and Starr was over and they would never work together again. This happened after Hudson dropped out of Starr's 2006 tour as musical director to do the TV show The One: Making A Music Star. According to Palmiere, Hudson now claims that the split was over Starr's insistence on using synthesized sounds, for which Stewart is known, whereas Hudson wanted real guitars, pianos, strings etc.[1] However, about the parting with Hudson, Starr said (in response to Palmiere's report), "The separation between Mark Hudson and myself was a question of trust and friendship and had nothing to do with synthesizers."

The album was released on CD, MP3, and USB Wristband. It was available as a free audio stream at www.vh1classic.com before its release date. "Liverpool 8" was released on CD and digital download as the first single from the album on January 7, 2008. Liverpool 8 entered the UK Album Chart at #91, and reached a peak of #94 on the Billboard 200.

The album has a 61 percent "generally favorable" rating from Metacritic.^[2] Billboard gave a positive review, calling it "full of nostalgia for the good ol' days".^[3] All Music Guide stated that "it's nothing too flashy and it has no one tune that calls attention to itself".^[4] The Times gave a particluarly critical review, stating that "it’s hard not to boggle at Liverpool’s susceptibility to flattery" and "Just because it was fun to make, it doesn’t follow that you might enjoy listening to it."

Vampire Weekend came to public attention via a variety of blogs, first on the African music audioblog "Benn loxo du taccu" and then six months later on Stereogum, leading many to cite them as another example of the "blog band" phenomenon. The band is influenced by both African popular music and Western Classical Music. They describe their genre of music as "Upper West Side Soweto", performing such songs as "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," which references Congolese soukous music. This song was #67 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007. The band made a television appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman on February 1, 2008.

The members of the band met while attending Columbia University with their good friend Jennifer Wall.

The debut album from New Yorkers Vampire Weekend was released on January 29, 2008 through XL Recordings. The first single "Mansard Roof" was released on October 28, 2007. The album reached number 22 in the UK chart on its debut and reached #99 in Australia

A Sun Came is a folk rock music album by Sufjan Stevens, released in 2000. It was reissued on Asthmatic Kitty Records 4 years later.

Among Stevens back catalog, A Sun Came is notable for being recorded on 4 track. As noted in the All Music Guide review of the album, the album explores many types of ethnic music from throughout the globe, ranging from Celtic, Indian, Middle Eastern, Moroccan, Far Eastern and American folk music.

Stevens himself has described the album's sound as incorporating "traditional pop music, medieval instrumentation with Middle Eastern inflections, tape loops, digital samples, literary vocals, manic percussion, woodwinds, sitar, amp distortion and Arabic chants".

Like many Stevens albums that would follow, features a multitude of instruments ranging from banjo, sitar, oboe and xylophone. All in all the album features Stevens playing fourteen instruments

"Joy! Joy! Joy!" was recorded for the 2001 re-release and "You Are the Rake," a reworking of "Rake," was recorded for the 2004 re-release.

Inches is an album by Les Savy Fav. Initial pressings of the CD came with a DVD featuring live performances, music videos and photos.

The album is a collection of singles from 1995-2004, containing many songs that were previously available on vinyl only. Among the tracks is "The Sweat Descends" which later became a single and was placed on several Best of 2004 rankings. "Meet Me in the Dollar Bin" is a song about one-hit wonders and bands that fall out of style. The song "Reformat" is recorded in two versions: a live version from a concert with fans providing extra vocals and a six-minute 'radio play' about a submarine captain who is executed by guillotine in a football stadium.

Tower of Song is a tribute album to Leonard Cohen, released in 1995 on A&M Records. It takes its name of a song by Cohen, that has been covered by Marianne Faithfull, Robert Forster, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Martha Wainwright and Dax Riggs.

The album was savaged by many music critics, who pointed out that the album's glossy mainstream pop approach badly distorted the context of Cohen's music.

Featuring funky African polyrhythms, the album became an influential post punk, world music and New Wave recording. Remain in Light uniquely blended African-American, continental African and white American musical forms; Rolling Stone magazine's Ken Tucker noted at the time that there had rarely been "a larger gap between what black and white audiences were listening to." In a review of the album, fellow Rolling Stone writer Gavin Edwards commented that "the Talking Heads had already mastered minimalist funk, but here they built jams around thick, slurred rhythms." Many fans and critics of Remain in Light have said that the album is an extended groove whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Apart from the music, the lyrical themes explored on the album reflect what Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians writer Robert Walser considers a postmodern character, in that "....[they] depict disorientation, ironic distance and distrust of centering narratives." As a result of its polyrhythmic architecture and collaborative, funk-driven songs, Remain in Light compelled Talking Heads to include seven additional musicians, including guitarist Adrian Belew and Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, on their concert tour in support of the album.

The final track on the album, "The Overload", was Talking Heads' attempt to emulate the sound of the band Joy Division. This is in spite of the fact that no one in the band had actually heard the music of Joy Division. Rather, it was based on an idea of what Joy Division might sound like.

Caetano Emanuel Viana Teles Veloso (born 7 August 1942), known as Caetano Veloso, is a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian composer and singer, called "One of the greatest songwriters of the century" ^[1], whose voice "carries an abiding tenderness"^[2] and is sometimes considered the Bob Dylan of Brazil.

He began his career singing Latin pop with a bossa nova edge, and he has cited his greatest musical influences from his early period as João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto would say later about Caetano's contribution that it added an intellectual dimension to Brazilian popular music.) With such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, and Os Mutantes, and a strong influence of the later work of The Beatles, Veloso developed Tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Even though Tropicalismo was controversial among traditional critics, this album introduced to “MPB (Música Popular Brasileira)” new elements for making music with an eclectic style.

Joia is a wonderful warm spare LP from the mid 70s, with Caetano's voice out front, and minimal accompaniment by percussion, guitar, and keyboards. This doesn't mean that it's a snoozer, though, because it's got a deep rich sound, and excellent material throughout that's given even more of a focus because of Caetano's spare warm vocals. Loads of great tracks, including "Joia", "Lua, Lua, Lua, Lua", "Minha Mulher", and his excellent cover of "Help", sung in a breathy ballad with a twist that's totally different than the Beatles' version.

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda (born June 19, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro), popularly known as Chico Buarque is a Brazilian singer, composer, dramatist and writer. He is best known for his music, which often comments on Brazil's social, economic and cultural reality.

Chico Buarque came from a privileged, intellectual family background: his father Sérgio Buarque de Holanda was a well-known historian and sociologist. A studious child with a precocious interest in music and writing, Chico was impressed by bossa nova, specifically the work of João Gilberto.

In the Court of the Crimson King (an observation by King Crimson) is the 1969 debut album by the British progressive rock group King Crimson. The album reached No.3 on the British charts. It continues to be a classic and has been a tremendous influence on other artists. The album is certified gold in the United States.

The album generally considered by many the launching point of progressive rock where blues-oriented rock is completely abandoned in favour of more jazz and European symphonic elements incorporated. The Who's Pete Townshend was quoted as calling the album "an uncanny masterpiece".

The album was remastered and re-released on vinyl and CD several times during the 1980s and 1990s. The original master tapes were finally located in a Virgin Records storage vault in 2003, leading to a much improved remastered version released in 2004.

Made in the Dark is the third studio album from British electronic indie pop band Hot Chip. Containing thirteen songs, the album is scheduled for release in February 2008.

The band have said the album will have a rockier sound than previous records, along with the usual electronic elements.

Victory for the Comic Muse is a 2006 studio album by Neil Hannon, under band name The Divine Comedy. It is the second album since the departure of the rest of the band, after 2004's Absent Friends, and the ninth album released under that banner. The title is a reference to the group's 1990 debut Fanfare for the Comic Muse.

On the 28^th February 2007, Victory for the Comic Muse won the Choice Music Prize at a ceremony that took place in Dublin's Vicar St. venue. The Choice Music Prize is Ireland's equivalent to the Mercury Music Prize. The judging panel was made up of 12 representatives from the Irish music industry. The prize consisted of a trophy as well as a cheque for €10,000. The Divine Comedy's victory was unexpected as the album had received some lukewarm reviews and there was strong competition from the likes of The Immediate, Duke Special and Snow Patrol.

The album is fairly unique in the Divine Comedy catalogue - and in the catalogue of most recent popular music - in that Hannon's original aim with the album was to record it entirely in two weeks, with the minimum of overdubbing. As such, almost all of the music on the album - much to the chagrin of the classical players involved on almost every track, and the Divine Comedy band itself - was recorded in live takes. At first, they attempted to use no click tracks or headphones, but eventually they did. The band would record their part, the orchestra would overdub theirs, and then Hannon would record his vocals. No further overdubbing took place unless absolutely necessary, in a fairly hurried style of recording, and in stark contrast to the modern recording technique of stacking up tracks.

During the recording, Hannon's vocals had to be recorded even more hurriedly than planned because for most of the two weeks he was suffering from a cold that got progressively worse before finally clearing up.

The song 'The Light Of Day' has a very offbeat feel, which is due not to a strange time signature but due to most of the song being in five-bar phrases, rather than the standard four or eight.
A special edition version of the album, officially available only on the first day of release, came with second DVD disc and an additional cardboard sleeve.

souljacker is a 2001 album by the band Eels.

Unlike some of Everett's other albums, most notably Electro-Shock Blues, Souljacker is mostly based on stories of outsiders rather than on Everett's own life. Characters were inspired from various sources, including circus freaks ("Dog Faced Boy") and a recording engineer with an abusive past ("Bus Stop Boxer"). German director Wim Wenders called "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping" his favorite Eels song. Wenders directed the video for the album's lead (and only) single, "Souljacker part I", which was released in the UK on 10 September 2001 and reached #30 in the singles chart. The second track on the album, "That's Not Really Funny", was used as the theme tune to all three series of the BBC's animated comedy, Monkey Dust (2003-2005). 'World Of Shit' was also used to soundtrack a one-off sketch on an episode in the second series.

The original version was used for one season of the show, with a specially-recorded version being substituted thereafter.

The Gerbils were an indie rock band that formed in Athens, GA in 1998. Part of the Elephant Six Collective, the band released two albums and toured nationwide during their tenure.

The band consisted of Scott Spillane, John D'Azzo and Will Westbrook, college roommates in Ruston, LA. Along with sometimes-cellist Penny Burbank, they released a couple singles on a variety of record labels from 1996-1998 before recording an album (which included the four previously-released songs) in 1998 on Hidden Agenda Records.

Spillane's Neutral Milk Hotel bandmate Jeremy Barnes eventually joined as drummer, which drove the somewhat twee pop sound of the band's first album towards a more energetic hard rock. The members of the band decided to unofficially call it quits with a farewell show in 1999 in Athens. While D'Azzo pursued interests in California, Spillane and Westbrook (with the help of members of Of Montreal, Elf Power, and Neutral Milk Hotel) finished mixing the album that was completed with Chris Bishop prior to their separation. Once The Battle of Electricity was finished, the Gerbils did a national tour with Elf Power before again separating. Once again, the band has reformed, playing regularly and becoming fully active.

Guitarist Will Westbrook died on Monday, December 11th, 2006 due to an undisclosed illness.

The Battle of Electricity is the second album.

Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey was the first solo project released by Portland musician Colin Meloy of The Decemberists. The album was released in January, 2005 and was available exclusively on Meloy's first solo tour. Copies of it were later made available to raise money to benefit The Decemberists after their trailer with all their instruments was stolen in 2005.

The album is his first in a series of EPs where he covers the songs of his influences. This particular EP contains six cover versions of songs by Morrissey.

Histoire de Melody Nelson is a 1971 concept album by controversial French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. The Lolita-esque pseudo-autobiographical plot involves the middle-aged Gainsbourg unintentionally colliding his 26-horsepower 1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost into teenage nymphet Melody Nelson's bicycle, and the subsequent seduction and romance that ensues. Histoire de Melody Nelson is considered by many critics and fans to be Gainsbourg's most influential and accomplished album.

At just under twenty-eight minutes, the short running time and the stylistic consistency and similarity throughout the album gives it qualities more in line with an EP or an extended musical piece with a number of movements. Histoire de Melody Nelson‘s mix of freewheeling guitar, funk style bass guitar, near spoken word vocal delivery, and lush, deep orchestrated string and choral arrangements by Jean-Claude Vannier [1] have proven to be highly influential amongst later francophone and anglophone musical performers including the French band Air, David Holmes, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Portishead, and Beck, whose 2002 track "Paper Tiger" from Sea Change is extremely close to the distinctive Histoire de Melody Nelson sound.

After the release of the album, a music video was made for each song, and released all together as "Melody" a short musical.

Jean-Claude Vannier performed the album live at London's Barbican on October 21st 2006 with guest vocalists Jarvis Cocker, Badly Drawn Boy, The Bad Seeds’ Mick Harvey and lead singer from Super Furry Animals, Gruff Rhys. Vannier performed the album in its entirety alongside Vannier's solo album L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches.

Publicity for the Barbican concert revealed that the musicians used for the album were Dougie Wright, Big Jim Sullivan, Herbie Flowers and Vic Flick who all joined Vannier for the concert.

Time Lapse Consortium is an American band formed in 2003. Their sound is described as Psychedelic, Jazz, and Funk. The group consists of current Incubus members Mike Einziger on Guitar, Jose Pasillas on Drums, Ben Kenney on Bass (although he was not a member of Incubus at the time of joining Time Lapse Consortium), Neal Evans of Soulive on Organ, and Suzie Katayama contributing on string arrangements.

Time Lapse Consortium was created in 2003 by Einziger after his main group Incubus took a break after supporting their 2001 release Morning View. Einziger describes his ideas on the band's Myspace page.

"Time Lapse Consortium is an idea that had been swirling around in my brain for quite some time. For years I've been fascinated by the great bandleaders and arrangers of the 50's and 60's. People such as Quincy Jones, Esquivel, Sergio Mendes, etc.... With all of those instruments, it's like being able to paint a picture with many different colors. It's a very different experience from writing music for a standard rock and roll setup."^[1]

The band performed their first (and only) show at the Roxy Theater in Hollywood,California on January 24, 2003. Despite only three days of rehearsal beforehand, the band played before an excited and packed crowd. The show was recorded, and shortly thereafter 10,000 copies were released on the internet, all of which were sold quickly.^[2] The musicians returned to their respective projects after the show, but thanks to the continued popularity of Incubus and music downloading the album continues to have a strong following and a growing fanbase.

Time Out is a 1959 album by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz (mainly waltz or double-waltz time, but also 9/8, 14/4, and most famously 5/4).

Although the album was intended as an experiment (Columbia president Goddard Lieberson was willing to chance releasing it) and received negative reviews by critics upon its release, it became one of the best-known and biggest-selling jazz albums, reaching number two in the U.S. Billboard "Pop Albums" chart, and produced one single — Paul Desmond's "Take Five" — that reached number five in the Billboard "Adult Contemporary" chart.

In 2005, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Regeneration is the seventh studio album by The Divine Comedy - and their first for Parlophone/EMI - on March 12, 2001. Three singles were released from the album: "Love What You Do", "Bad Ambassador" and "Perfect Lovesong", the latter failing to make top 40.

Produced by Nigel Godrich, known for his work with Radiohead, this album is distinguishbly different from Neil Hannon's other work, as it leans towards more stripped down, sombre tunes than the catchy, orchestral-driven songs that his band are well-known for. The album is slightly reminiscent of the now-deleted debut Fanfare for the Comic Muse because of its stylistic differences to their accessible work. It is also worth noting that it is a more group-concentrated effort, hence the more organic sound.

Shooting At Unarmed Men is the music project of former Mclusky member Jon Chapple (vocals/guitar), Steve Morgan (drums), and Big Joan member Simon Jarvis (bass). The original bassist for the band's formal incarnation was King Alexander member Simon Alexander (bass/vocals), although the band had existed as a sporadical joke since circa 1999. Alexander also co-wrote the mclusky song "Chases", from the mclusky Do Dallas album.

"Yes! Tinnitus!" was released on May 22nd 2006 - however, Chapple has since moved to Melbourne, Australia for two years (the band played their last gig in the Northern Hemisphere on April 16th 2006 at Cardiff's Clwb Ifor Bach, where Chapple also sold most of his books, videos and some of his records). Since emigrating, Chapple has assembled an Australian incarnation of the band with members of the bands The Cheats and Riff Random - Tom Cooper and Julian Tovey. Chapple hinted at the possibility of maintaining two distinct versions of the band in order to play shows on both continents^[1]. During October 2006, the band played a weekly residency at the Tote in Melbourne, played at the Melbourne show in the Big Day Out festival in January 2007 and continue to be an active part of the local music scene.

Curses is the debut release of Welsh band Future of the Left.
It was released on September 24th, 2007 in the UK and October 1st in Japan. A surprise to some fans of Jarcrew and mclusky was the band's occasional move towards songs with a synthesizer, namely a Roland Juno-60, in favour of Falco's guitar - this has been met with mixed reactions both live and on record, but reviews[2] and discussions on the band's messageboard have, on the whole, been extremely positive. Original Soundtrack: The Darjeeling Limited is the soundtrack album for the Wes Anderson film, The Darjeeling Limited. The album features three songs by The Kinks, "Powerman", "Strangers" and "This Time Tomorrow", all from the 1970 album Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, as well as "Play With Fire" by The Rolling Stones. Most of the album, however, features film score music composed by Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray and other artists from the cinema of India. The Bedlam in Goliath is the fourth full-length studio album by American progressive rock band The Mars Volta, scheduled for release on January 29, 2008 through Universal Motown Records. On January 15, 2008, the album was leaked online. Produced by guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez with engineer Robert Carranza, the album's creation process was subject to "bad luck controversy" after the band's bizarre experience with an ouija that Rodriguez-Lopez bought as a gift for Cedric Bixler-Zavala. "Wax Simulacra" was released on November 19, 2007 as the album's first single, coupled with a cover version of "Pulled to Bits", originally by Siouxsie & the Banshees. Vinyl editions of the album include an ouija inside the gatefold, claimed to be the band's own take on the board they previously owned.

Having previously contributed the artwork to the 2006 release of Amputechture, Jeff Jordan was again brought in to handle the illustrations for the album, creating 11 original paintings to coincide with the theme of The Bedlam in Goliath, as well as including a piece from his own gallery.

Friend and Foe is the third release from the Portland, Oregon-based band Menomena. It was released January 23, 2007 by Barsuk Records. The cover art is designed by Craig Thompson, writer and illustrator of the award-winning graphic novel Blankets. Twelve Bar Blues is the debut solo album from former Stone Temple Pilots and current Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland. Released in 1998 on Atlantic Records, the album was a commercial failure, but achieved some critical acclaim. The design concept of the cover is an homage to the cover design of John Coltrane's Blue Train album.

Selling England by the Pound is the fifth studio album by the progressive rock band Genesis and was recorded and released in 1973. It followed Foxtrot and was the band's commercial peak with Peter Gabriel, hitting # 3 in the UK. The album would eventually go gold in the US in 1990.

The album cover is a painting by Betty Swanwick called The Dream. The original painting did not feature a lawn mower; the band had Swanwick add it later as an allusion to the song "I Know What I Like."

Sunna was a British industrial music/hard rock band who released one album (One Minute Science) in 2000.

The band toured with A Perfect Circle during the year 2000^[2], as well as The Smashing Pumpkins on their final European tour ^[3]. They released their only album to date, One Minute Science on Massive Attack's Melankolic label, that year, with the singles "I'm Not Trading" and "Power Struggle". The latter single appeared in the movie Hollow Man, to which Kevin Bacon can be seen singing along to.

Richie Mills, their drummer, left the band in spring of 2001, and would have been replaced by Mark Richardson, of Skunk Anansie, but he joined Feeder instead following the death of that band's drummer Jon Lee. It is thought that the band began recording a second album but no news of its release appears to have surfaced so it can be assumed that Sunna quietly disbanded, something suggested also by their official website being defunct.

Young Modern is the fifth album by Australian alternative rock band Silverchair, released on March 31, 2007. Young Modern debuted at #1 on the Australian albums chart on April 15, 2007, and #8 on the New Zealand albums chart.

Young Modern was Silverchair's fifth consecutive album to debut at number one on the ARIA albums chart, making Silverchair the first band to accomplish this feat in Australia. Young Modern also received four Aria Awards at the 2007 Aria Awards, including Single of the Year (for "Straight Lines") and Album of the Year.

Young Modern was received with great enthusiasm from reviewers. All Music Guide's review said the album contained "catchy melodic hooks, inspired lyrical themes, and stunning string arrangements", and called it the "pinnacle of the band's fascinating development". Reviewer Clayton Bolger heaped praise on most of the songs on the album, calling "Straight Lines" an "instant rock classic".^[5]

Review website Xdafied was equally impressed by the album, and was the second site to praise the opening track, "Young Modern Station", stating that it "will leave you in awe at its refreshingly different chord progression". Xdafied's reviewer summarised the review by calling the album "a unique masterpiece".^[19] Meanwhile, Rolling Stone reviewer David Fricke called Silverchair's members "young (in their late twenties)...[and] aggressively modern",^[20] and Entertainment Weekly called the album a "polished glam-rock suite".^[21] Sputnikmusic reviewer Tyler Fisher also approved of the album, although he did not think it was as good as it was made out to be, commenting "It is not as good as the ARIA awards will undoubtedly make it out to be but still one of the better mainstream listens of the year."^[2]

Nick Pearson of PopMatters, meanwhile, was highly critical of the album. He began his review with the statement "Once you reach the level of intellectual maturity where you can tell the difference between cryptic but poetic lyrics and nonsensical crap, you have outgrown Silverchair", and continued in the same fashion throughout. Pearson likened Johns to Kurt Cobain, saying they share a common inability; "his inability to write lyrics". His only praise was for the third single released from the album, "If You Keep Losing Sleep", stating "'If You Keep Losing Sleep' is proof that Silverchair are capable of recording interesting music"

The Winding Sheet is an album by American musician Mark Lanegan that was released in 1990. It was Lanegan's first solo work, and is notable in its departure from the characteristic sound of Screaming Trees, the band he fronted from 1985 until 1996. While the work done in that group was much more energetic and fit into the burgeoning grunge genre of the late 80s/early 90s, The Winding Sheet has a much more stripped down sound, defining Lanegan's solo work largely for the rest of the decade. The album was a modest success.

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" was occasionally performed live by the American rock band Nirvana during the early 1990s. Singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain was introduced to the song by Lanegan, and even played guitar on Lanegan's version. Like Lanegan, Cobain usually screamed the song's final verse. Cobain earned critical and commercial acclaim for his acoustic performance of the song during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged appearance in 1993. This version was posthumously released on the band's MTV Unplugged in New York album (and as a B-side on their recalled "Pennyroyal Tea" single) the following year. A solo Cobain home demo of the song, recorded in 1990, appears on the band's 2004 box set, With the Lights Out. It does not feature the final screamed verse of later versions.

Released in 1984, Ocean Rain is the fourth album by the British post-punk band Echo & the Bunnymen and is widely considered their best. The main single from this album, "The Killing Moon", was later used in the soundtrack of the movies Donnie Darko, Grosse Pointe Blank and The Girl Next Door.

The album was reissued with remastered sound and several bonus tracks in 2003. The bonus tracks include "Angels and Devils", the b-side of the "Silver" single, five tracks (11-15) from a taped live session in July 1983 at the Liverpool Cathedral for the "Play at Home - Life at Brian's" TV program, and two tracks (16-17) from "A Crystal Day", a live concert in Liverpool in May 1984.

It is listed at number 38 in the greatest British albums in a list published by The Observer.

Closer is a 1980 album by Joy Division. It was the band's second and final album, after Unknown Pleasures. It is considered an important album in the post-punk movement. The album was originally scheduled to be released on May 8, 1980, but ended up arriving in stores in July, shortly after lead singer Ian Curtis' suicide. The record was originally released on the Factory Records label as a 12" LP and reached #6 on the UK Albums Chart.

Closer, produced by Martin Hannett, has a sound which is both lusher and more sombre than Unknown Pleasures, with more use of synthesizers and studio effects. Many of its songs have a despairing, funereal feel, and its cover art appears to reflect this, although it was chosen by Peter Saville before he had heard any of the music; both the photo and the bleakness of the music and lyrics amplified the already strong mystique surrounding the album after Curtis's suicide.

The opening track, "Atrocity Exhibition", shares its name with The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard, a book that Curtis read and loved, but only after writing the bulk of the song. It was ranked 10th on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1980s, 72nd on NME's 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Music site Digital Dream Door placed it #30 on their list of the '100 Greatest Alternative Albums'^[1].In 2003, the album was ranked number 157 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

This album, along with Unknown Pleasures and Still has been remastered and was released September 17, 2007 (2007-09-17). As with Unknown Pleasures and Still, the remaster comes packaged with a bonus live disc, recorded at the University of London.

The album cover was designed by Martyn Atkins and Peter Saville, with photography from Bernard Pierre Wolff. The photograph on the cover is of the Appiani family tomb in the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno in Genoa, Italy, by Demetrio Paernio.

Highway 61 Revisited is Bob Dylan's sixth studio album, released in 1965 by Columbia Records. It is Dylan's first album to be recorded entirely with a full rock band, after he experimented with the approach on half of Bringing It All Back Home. It is commonly tagged as documenting the "angry young man" period in Dylan's career, in-between the playfulness of its surrounding albums; many of the songs on Highway 61 are of an accusatory nature and feature rough, loud takes.

Featuring hits and concert staples such as "Like a Rolling Stone", "Desolation Row", and "Ballad of a Thin Man", it is also generally considered to be among the artist's best and most influential efforts. Dylan himself commented, "I'm not gonna be able to make a record better than that one... Highway 61 is just too good. There's a lot of stuff on there that I would listen to!"^[1]

The album peaked at #3 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and #4 in the UK, while "Like a Rolling Stone" reached #2 on the US Pop Singles chart and #4 in the UK, also receiving the accolade of being placed #1 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The album itself was ranked #4 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Live at the Apollo was recorded on the night of October 24, 1962 at Brown's own expense. His label, King Records, originally opposed releasing the album, believing that a live album featuring no new songs would not be profitable. The label finally relented under pressure from Brown and his manager Bud Hobgood. (It was disagreements such as this that moved Brown to begin recording for Smash Records the following year in violation of his contract with King.^[1]) To King's surprise, Live at the Apollo was an amazingly rapid seller. It spent 66 weeks on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, peaking at #2. Many record stores, especially in the southeast U. S., found themselves unable to keep up with the demand for the product, eventually ordering several cases at a time. R&B disc jockeys often would play side 1 in its entirety, pausing (usually to insert commercials) only to return to play side 2 in full as well. The side break occurred in the middle of the long track "Lost Someone".

In 2003, the album was ranked number 24 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Brown went on to record several more albums at the Apollo over the course of his career, including 1968's Live at the Apollo, Vol. II (King), 1971's Revolution of the Mind: Recorded Live at the Apollo, Vol. III (Polydor) and Live at the Apollo 1995 (Scotti Bros.).

Although not credited on the album cover or label, Brown's vocal group, The Famous Flames (Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth), played an important co- starring role in Live at the Apollo.

Holy Fuck is a lo-fi improvisational electronica band from Toronto, Canada. The band have been called "Toronto's evil supergroup". They are a part of Dependent Music, a music label/collective that began in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994.

The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film sequencer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks. According to Pitchfork Media, "The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping, splicing, programming and the like—of that music." Their music has been described as a "strangely melodic and pulse pounding free-form fusion of the heavy chug and groove rock of Trans Am and the quirkiness of Beck rolled into one mesmerizing viewing and listening experience."

Daniel Johns and Paul Mac met in 1997 when Paul Mac remixed "Freak" off Silverchair's Freak Show album. The two became friends and Paul Mac worked on the subsequent Silverchair albums Neon Ballroom, Diorama and Young Modern. The two worked on the experimental I Can't Believe It's Not Rock EP released in 2000.

Failure was an influential American rock band (often also classified as alternative rock and/or space rock) that was active from 1990 to 1997, during which they recorded and released three critically-acclaimed albums. They are often compared to other hard rock bands from that time that were similarly labeled as "alternative", such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Bush, but are distinguished by their meticulous attention to textural sonic detail, inventive use of guitar effects and signal processing, and the overall expansive sound design of their later albums. Twin Freaks is a collaborative album by musician Paul McCartney with DJ and producer Freelance Hellraiser (Roy Kerry). The album was released on June 14, 2005.

History and structure

McCartney and Kerry created the double vinyl album as a continuation of Kerry's collaboration with McCartney from a 2004 tour. Kerry had previously released the mashup album A Stroke of Genius, in 2002. The format of the mashup is that of an extreme remix in which two disparate musical and recording experiences are combined in a manner that goes beyond remix to literally merge or mashup the two songs so that they emerge as something unique or hybridized. The technique sometimes obscures the original source material or so seamlessly blends the divergent elements that disentangling the grafted parts becomes nearly impossible.

Kerry performed a half hour set prior to McCartney's 2004 gigs in which the Kerry remixed various McCartney tracks into unusual and often unrecognizable forms. Twin Freaks was the outgrowth of these manipulations.

All McCartney tracks are strongly revised and reinvented in the process. Who is responsible for what aspects of the works or their reinvention is unclear. Certainly parts of basic McCartney tracks are vigorously reworked.

The album was only produced as a double vinyl release. The cover and interior artwork features paintings that are similar in tone and style to artist Willem de Kooning. McCartney knew the late artist, with whom he shared similar painting styles.

"Really Love You" and "Lalula" were also released together as a one-sided 12" single.

801 were an English progressive rock band that were originally formed in 1976 for three live concerts by

In 1976, while Roxy Music had temporarily disbanded, 801 (also referred to as THE 801) got together as a temporary project and began rehearsing at Island Studios, Hammersmith, about three weeks before their first gig. The name of the band was taken from the Eno song "The True Wheel", which appears on his 1974 solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). The refrain of the song -- "We are the 801, we are the central shaft" -- reportedly came to him in a dream.

801 performed three critically highly acclaimed concerts: in Norfolk, at the Reading Festival and the final concert on September 3 at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. This last concert was recorded live and released as the album 801 Live. The music consisted of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno, and Quiet Sun, plus a full-scale rearrangement of Lennon-McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows" and an off-the-wall excursion into The Kinks' 1964 hit "You Really Got Me".

Meat Puppets II is the second album by the Tempe, Arizona band the Meat Puppets. It is completely unlike their self-titled debut album, which was furious noisy hardcore with unintelligible vocals, which were more nonsensical screams than lyrics. It covers many genres from country-style rock which is almost bluegrass at times ("Magic Toy Missing", "Climbing", Lost") to slow acoustic songs ("Plateau", "Oh Me") to psychedelic guitar effects ("Aurora Borealis") to hard rock ("Lake of Fire"). Rykodisc reissued the album in 1999 with extra tracks and b-sides, including a cover of the Rolling Stones' Aftermath-era track "What To Do."

The term "cowpunk" has been used to describe the blend of punk and country found on this album and elsewhere in the Puppets' catalogue; they are generally credited as being the main pioneers of this style.^{[citation needed]}

It is also known for its unique cover art. On the back of the original vinyl, the art is credited to Curt Kirkwood and Neal Holliday.

The Meat Puppets' SST labelmates The Minutemen covered "Lost" on the EP Tour-Spiel and their last studio album, 3-Way Tie (For Last). Three of the album's songs were covered by Nirvana during their "Unplugged" show for MTV ("Plateau", "Oh, Me", and "Lake of Fire").

Closing Time is the debut album of Tom Waits, released in 1973 (see 1973 in music) on Asylum Records.

Contrary to some belief, the song "Ice Cream Man" is a Waits original, not a cover of the John Brim blues standard of the same title. Waits' version, however, was covered in 1993 by Screamin' Jay Hawkins for his album Black Music For White People.

A cover version of "Ol' '55" was later a hit for The Eagles, who recorded it for their 1974 album On the Border.

The song "Midnight Lullaby" borrows its opening line from the English nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence".

Here Come the Warm Jets is the first solo album by Brian Eno (although credited simply as "Eno"), recorded in a few weeks shortly after he left Roxy Music.

The album's musical styles range from aggressive garage rock ("Blank Frank") to serene Beach Boys-style reverie ("On Some Faraway Beach"). Eno enlisted a large number of guest musicians to play on the album, including three members of Roxy Music, guitarist Robert Fripp and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and members of Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies. One of the most notable performances from these guests is the cacophonous three-minute-long guitar solo by Fripp on the song "Baby's On Fire".

"Warm jets" is used by Eno to describe the distorted guitar in the title track, which evokes the sound of a jet engine.[1] Eno himself claims that he often chooses words for their sound.

The album provided Eno with modest success in the UK album charts, and would in fact be his only album to chart for the remainder of the 1970s apart from 1978's Music for Airports.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 436 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

If you love covers, irony, and good causes, boy does the Arena Rock Recording Co. have a hat trick for you! The Portland-based label with the ironic name serves up Bridging the Distance: A Portland, OR Covers Compilation on April 17.

The title don't lie: this 19-track monster collects 19 Portland-associated artists bridging the distance between the past and present with eyebrow-raising covers, all to benefit p:ear, which helps homeless and transitional youths bridge financial and class distances through its mentorship programs. Also, Portland has a lot of bridges! We're talking layers upon layers of profound meaning here, people!

Plenty of your Rose City favorites have signed on for this one, including the Decemberists, who take on Fleetwood Mac's "Think About Me", the Thermals, who do Led Zeppelin's "Tangerine", and Britt Daniel, who closes out the comp with a rendition of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me".

Other highlights include the Joggers committing their live-favorite Yes cover to tape, Death Cab for Cutie's Christopher Walla giving us nothing but Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams", and the Dandy Warhols re-investigating the Cult. Liverpool Sound Collage is an ambient electronic album by Paul McCartney, which is also credited to The Beatles, Super Furry Animals and Youth. McCartney had released two projects with Youth under the moniker The Fireman. Because McCartney was so heavily involved in its creation, in addition to his production credit, Liverpool Sound Collage, which was released in 2000, is generally considered a part of his main discography.

Asked by artist Peter Blake to create something musical and with a Liverpool spirit to it, in order to complement his concurrent artwork exhibition, McCartney ended up harking all the way back to session chatter by The Beatles (hence their "involvement") and using snippets of his 1991 classical piece Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. He also can be heard walking the streets and asking various pedestrians to give their impressions of Liverpool and The Beatles.

Liverpool Sound Collage was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
